Places That You Must Visit When You Are In Varanasi

Varanasi is considered as the cultural hub of India and considered as one of the oldest city of the world. 1. Ramnagar fort and Museum- The Mughal era fortification

Ramnagar fort is situated at the bank of river Ganges. This structure is made in 18th century for the residence of the royal family who still resides in the fort. The crimson sunset on the reflected on the ramnagar fort gives it a breathtaking look. This fort also houses a museum which is famous for its old collection of  American cars, ivory work, medieval costumes and a huge astronomical clock. You can visit this fort between 10am to 5:30 pm

2. Chunar fort


This fort is situated in the Mirzapur area of Uttar Pradesh which is around 24 km southwest of Varanasi. This fort was made in 16th century by Mughal emperor Babur. There are tomb of soldiers from mughal era. The fort is said to divinely blessed and is one of the popular tourist places.

3. Sarnath- abode of Buddha


Sarnath is located around 13 km away from the city. This is one of the most important buddhist pilgrimage in India. Sarnath is one of the most widely visited tourist destinations. It is believed that after getting enlightened in Bodhgaya, lord Buddha came to sarnath and gave his first sermon.

4. Man mandir observatory

When in Varanasi, you should visit man mandir observatory which is situated in Man Singh Palace. This observatory was built by Sawai Jai Singh II. This observatory has 4 astronomical instrument which is used to see the activities of various stars.

5. Alamgir Mosque



This mosque is built on the site of a vishnu temple which was demolished. The mosque stands dominating Panchganga ghat which signifies the Ganga- Yamuna tahzib of the city.

6. Chowk and Vishwanath Gali-  the shopping destination


Named after lord vishwanath, this is one of the crowdest places of the city. These places are famous for silk sarees, ornaments, handicrafts and many other things. You can also taste some lip smacking dishes from the city.

7. Gyan Vapi well


The gyanvapi well is situated inside the gyanvapi mosque which was built by Aurangzeb on the site of demolished kashi vishwanath temple according to stories. The well is considered a pious place as it is believed that the original Shiva Linga of the temple was thrown inside the well.

These were some places which were a slight different from the places you visit in Varanasi. Go around the city and explore its different side.
